Get A Talent Pass & Set Up Your Freelance Business in Dubai

Dubai is fast establishing itself as a global hub for investors and great talent. The Dubai Airport Freezone [DAFZ] has launched a new initiative to further this cause. ‘ Talent Pass’ is an initiative aimed to vitalize business investments in the free zone. In a nutshell, a talent pass is a license for freelance work.

Individuals with special skills and expertise in any particular area will be eligible to obtain this license. The license aims to attract global talent into Dubai and thus can be availed by citizens of any country. The individuals can be from various fields like media, education, technology, art, marketing, and consultancy.

Following the directive issued by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, this initiative was launched on 9 of January this year. A Memorandum of Understanding [MoU] was signed between Dubai Airport Freezone and Dubai Culture and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in this regard. This is expected to increase cooperation between private and public entities to promote cultural mobility and Dubai’s creative talent sector. Dubai aims to improve its creative economy sector, and this license is seen as a step to attract creative talent from around the world to Dubai.

How to apply

  1. Prepare your documents

You will need to prepare a CV, letter of recommendation, or a portfolio of your work. If you have a graduation in any specialized field, you need not present a letter of recommendation. These documents are required to verify your talent.

  1. Application fee

There is an application fee of Dh 9500 involved. The license is renewable annually. Visa charges would depend on the individual’s profile and the kind of work they are going to do.

  1. Apply at Dubai Airport Free Zone (DAFZ)

You can present your completed application form along with the required documents and pay the application fee at DAFZ. They will evaluate your application and if eligible would issue a license to do freelance work in free zones.

Benefits of the license

The license allows its holders a residence visa of three years along with a permit to do freelance work in the holder’s field of expertise. It also allows the license holder to rent and set up offices in free zone areas. Individuals will have access to the digital platforms of the free zone and the opportunity to develop customer networks through Dubai Airport Freezone customers. The free zones host large multinational companies, thus providing a great opportunity to develop your freelance business.

The visa comes as a response to the changing times and needs. It aims to boost the Dubai economy in post-pandemic times, especially since there has been a rise in the gig economy. The companies are moving fast towards freelance work as it is cheaper and easier to handle. Talent pass would help to legitimize and support freelance work. The pass is a way to attract global investors and skilled talents into Dubai.
